There are generally three different styles of Power Wheelchair. Rear Wheel Drive, Front Wheel Drive and Four Wheel drive. Each style has different handling characteristics and therefore are designed for specific uses. Electric powered wheelchairs or powerchairs can be designed specifically for indoor use, outdoor use - or even both. Electric wheelchairs or powerchairs are generally for people who have a difficulty using a manual wheelchair, perhaps as a result of arm, shoulder or hand injuries. The controls are generally a joystick controller on the arm of the electric wheelchair.

manualSelf-Propelled Wheelchairs

Attendant propelled chairs are designed to be moved by an attendant using the handles, and thus the back wheels are rimless and often smaller. Attendant propelled chairs are designed to be moved by an attendant using the handles by pushing the hand rims on the large rear wheels that are made of circular tubing attached to the outside of the large wheels.

What is a Transit Wheelchair?

Transit wheelchairs are for those who cannot propel themselves. They have small rear wheels and can be folded to save space when they need to be stored or transported. There are different types and styles of chair, each with its own features and benefits to suit individual requirements.

The chairs have been designed with user and attendant in mind with easy pushing handles and brakes for the attendant and comfortable armrests and footrests for the user
